Bachelor students
The assessment year must be completed before the stay abroad begins (not before applying for the exchange semester). The assessment year consists of the compulsory modules of the module groups "Einführung in die Kommunikationswissenschaft" & "Grundlagen Methoden und Statistik". All compulsory modules and the research seminar (Forschungsseminar) must be taken at IKMZ. The majority of IKMZ bachelor’s students complete their exchange semester in the spring (4th semester). The bachelor’s thesis may be written abroad with remote supervision by IKMZ. The exchange semester can also be scheduled after the bachelor’s thesis, but at least 12 - 15 ECTS need to be completed abroad.
Master students
The compulsory modules must be taken at IKMZ: Multivariate Statistics, Wissenschaftstheorie und Forschungslogik, the research seminar(s), Master Colloquium. The master’s thesis may be (continued to be) written abroad with remote supervision by IKMZ. The MA Colloquium is offered in the 3rd or 4th semester. This depends on the supervisor. In some divisions the focus of supervision is on the design (1st semester of the MA thesis) in other divisions on the analysis of the data (2nd semester of the MA thesis). When and how the colloquium takes place, will be communicated in the preliminary meeting. It is best to register for two or three preliminary meetings and clarify whether the colloquium is compatible with the stay abroad. The preliminary meetings are held at the end of each semester. Students enrolled in "Kommunikationswissenschaft und Medienforschung" or "Internet & Society" could schedule the exchange semester in the 3rd or 4th semester. Students enrolled in "Politische Kommunikation & Governance" or "Strategische Kommunikation & Management" could schedule the exchange semester in the 4th semester. The exchange semester can also be scheduled after the MA thesis, but at least 12 - 15 ECTS need to be completed abroad.
Yes. You may apply as often as you wish. However, students who have not yet had an exchange experience are prioritized at the time of allocation. In this way, we want to make such an experience possible for as many students as possible. As always, however, you can influence your own chances with a good application. Please note that at least 60 out of 120 (Bachelor) / 45 out of 90 (Master) ECTS must be obtained at UZH. The Erasmus+/SEMP stipend can only be claimed once during your BA and once during your MA studies.
Yes, you can apply for up to two exchange semesters in a row. In this case, you start your exchange year in fall. If you would like to start in spring, you will have to ask the partner university if they can extend your exchange with one semester.
