Planning to spend one or two semesters at another university in Switzerland or abroad? Such experiences are worthwhile and enriching: You get to experience regions with different languages and cultures, improve your language skills, make new contacts and can profit from a different range of studies.
The University of Zurich offers various possibilities to study one or two semesters abroad. In addition, we will assist you with helpful reports of past experiences and valuable planning tips.
Plan your stay early because some programs only have one sign-up date per year. Your stay abroad should match your individual needs and wishes. Inform yourself about the requirements and ranges of courses at the university you wish to study at. Careful preparation is an important prerequisite for a successful – and thus beneficial – period of study abroad and this preparation mostly lies in your hands. The advisory services at IKMZ or the International Relations Department of the University of Zurich are also on hand to assist you.
Bachelor degree program
The introductory phase needs to be completed at IKMZ before going abroad. The fourth semester is the best to study at a foreign university. Especially the elective lectures and the elective seminars are recommended for the semester spent abroad.
It is important that you conclude a recognition agreement with the mobility coordinator before going abroad. Generally, a maximum of 30 ECTS points from a Swiss (other than UZH) or foreign university can be credited for Communication Science and Media Research at IKMZ.
Master degree program
Mandatory modules in all master degree programs need to be completed at IKMZ. It makes sense to undertake elective lectures and seminars abroad. Generally, a maximum of 30 ECTS points from a different university will be credited in the major. It is important that you conclude a recognition agreement with the mobility coordinator before going abroad.
The third or fourth semester are suitable for studying abroad. Within the specialized master programs “Strategic Communication & Management” and “Political Communication & News” we recommend only the fourth semester.
