Internet & Society

From Twitter to Tik-Tok, Zoom calls to e-voting, and disinformation to algorithms, the Internet has changed everyday life. It has changed the way we communicate, how we live, where we can work, and just about every other facet of life. It offers opportunities and poses challenges for citizens, media, corporations, and governments at the local, national, and international levels. The master’s program Internet & Society provides students with in-depth knowledge and up-to-date findings about the social, economic, cultural, and political aspects of digital media. Students learn how to study the implications of Internet use, how to leverage the opportunities and how to meet the challenges of a constantly changing media ecosystem. What internet skills do we need to navigate the web of tomorrow? How can we tackle mis- and disinformation on social media? What are digital inequalities, why do they persist and how can we bridge them? Join this exciting state-of-the-art master’s program and find out.

What will I learn?

In the master’s program, Internet & Society students will learn to understand the wider implications of digital transformation. They will also learn the skills and methods to plan, run and evaluate their own research projects on these topics. The program focuses on research, particularly on questions such as:
What are the opportunities and challenges connected to current developments within the media, internet governance, and internet economics?

  • How do political institutions, NGOs, corporations, and other stakeholders communicate online?
  • What are the characteristics and dynamics of online debates?
  • How do people use digital media, with what individual and societal effects?

What can I do with it later?

Students will gain comprehensive expertise in how to analyze the transformational relationships between the Internet, individuals, and society, as well as profound knowledge of social-scientific methods. This qualifies students for management positions in media and information technology companies, government institutions, non-governmental organizations, and academia. Alums of the Internet & Society program work in academia, consulting, tech startups, NGOs, politics, advertising, marketing, PR, media, entertainment, publishing and journalism, the public sector, and more. The wide range of career options is supported by the excellent career services of the University of Zurich, which provide professional assessment and career counseling.
