Profile

Michael Latzer is Professor of Communications at the Department of Communication and Media Research (IKMZ), University of Zurich, Switzerland, where he chairs the Media Change & Innovation Division. Prior to joining IKMZ he held various positions at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (AAS) and other research institutions worldwide. Among others he was Deputy Director of the Research Unit for Institutional Change & European Integration (AAS); Senior Researcher at the Institute of Technology Assessment of AAS; Visiting Professor on eCommerce at the Department of Organisation, Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration; Visiting Fellow at the Center for Global Communications (GLOCOM), International University of Japan, Tokyo; Visiting Researcher at the Communications Department of Keio University, Tokyo; Visiting Professor on Communications Policy at the Department of Communication, University of California, San Diego; Visiting Scholar at the Columbia Institute of Tele-Information, Columbia University (CITI), New York. He was awarded various national and international fellowships including a three-year APART-Fellowship (Austrian Programme for Advanced Research and Technology) and a fellowship by the Japan Society of the Promotion of Sciences.

Prof. Latzer is an expert on media convergence and European information society issues, Internet studies, eCommerce, digital economy, telecommunications, and media governance (self- and co-regulation), and has lectured extensively on these issues. He holds a Mag. rer.soc.oec. (MSc) in Business Informatics and a Dr. phil. in Political Science from the University of Vienna, Austria, and habilitated in Economics and Politics of Communication at the University of Vienna.

Prof. Latzer is consultant to private and public institutions, member of numerous communications associations, such as the Muenchner Kreis, ITS Europe, ICA, ECREA, SGKM, DGPuK and member of the editorial board of various communications journals. He is the author of more than 100 publications including books on the European Public Sphere and Media Change; The State of Europe. Transformation of Statehood from a European Perspective; The Economics of eCommerce; Mediamatics – The Convergence of Media, Telecommunications and Information Technologies, Technology Governance; Self- and Co-Regulation in the Mediamatics Sector. His articles have been published in books and refereed journals such as New Media & Society; Telecommunications Policy; Convergence; Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media; The European Journal of Communication Research; Communications & Strategies; Knowledge, Technology & Policy; and EM-Electronic Markets.
